I spent 30 minutes last week talking to Freelance Writer Jennifer Flaten about tactics for maximizing a nonprofit’s Facebook page, including the importance of embedding online donation forms right onto the page (using tools such as Sage Fundraising Online). Online Fundraising article published in Advancing Philanthropy

It was my pleasure to write a recent article for Advancing Philanthropy, a publication for the members of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and executives of nonprofit organizations and institutions.

The article, called “Online Fundraising: Fact vs. Fiction” is published in the current January/February 2011 issue. In it, I discuss five of the most common misconceptions around online fundraising and reveal the facts behind them.

• Online fundraising in not as effective as offline fundraising. FICTION!


• Donors are increasingly comfortable with giving online. FACT!


• You can raise more money by reaching donors where they already are online. FACT!


• Set high expectations to achieve better results. FACT!


• Drop everything! You have to stop whatever else you are doing and focus on online giving in order to make it successful. FICTION!
